The  Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has revealed that his ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Finance to obtain financial authorization for recruitment across the education sector.

The education sector requires 93,000 new appointments to address vacant positions across multiple institutions, including higher learning establishments, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the Ghana Education Service, and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) service, according to the Minister’s statement.

The minister disclosed this information during the 22nd Biennial Congress of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, held in Aburi, Eastern Region. The congress centered on the theme “Rethinking Higher Education Pedagogy and Funding in the Age of AI: Ethics, Equity and Development Impact.”

Artificial Intelligence Integration in Education

The Minister praised the Association for addressing higher education challenges in the Artificial Intelligence era, noting that AI has transitioned from theoretical concept to current reality. He emphasized that AI will transform learning methodologies, teaching approaches, and professional practices, making its integration into pedagogical frameworks significant.

The Minister stressed the importance of maintaining ethical standards while operating in the AI environment, warning that unchecked AI implementation could foster academic dishonesty and reduced student effort unless accompanied by strong work ethics and ethical adherence.

He advocated for investments in digital literacy enhancement and AI-focused pedagogical training to develop critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities among students.

Government Allocates Funds for Research Allowances

The government has allocated GHC 610 million for book and research allowances, with the Minister confirming that the necessary warrant has been issued. He assured university educators that the funds representing legitimate employment benefits would be deposited into their accounts imminently.

Association Achievements Highlighted

Outgoing National President of UTAG, Professor Mamudu A. Akudugu, reported the Association’s accomplishments in securing improved financial and non-financial employment conditions for university academic personnel.

Professor Akudugu emphasized the Association’s role in protecting university autonomy and collegial governance from external interference. He disclosed that UTAG has distributed over GHC 706,000 in scholarship support to 164 students affected by flooding, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to social responsibility extending beyond membership welfare.

The Association has formed a working committee to design and develop a permanent UTAG Guest House facility in Accra, intended to serve as both a welfare amenity and revenue-generating enterprise for sustainable operations, according to the Professor’s statement.

The use of AI in the teaching and learning will, certainly, enhance teaching and learning in our Schools, Colleges and Universities, the inherent danger in the application of AI need to be guided by strong ethical standards otherwise it will breed an uncontrollable academic dishonesty ( academic research in our universities will suffer ) and students’ effort towards quality and independent academic work will gradually will be a thing of the past. Even now where there is no AI , students in schools and universities want higher grades for serious work done. So the advice of the Minister for Education should be implemented to avoid unethical use of the AI in our schools, colleges and the universities.
